Review : Okinawa Praise

[Disclaimer : I am not a brand ambassador nor I have been paid for writing this review. I wrote it to let many people get the information they need regarding this e-scooter as I am tired of explaining the features to many. All the opinions are purely my personal based on my riding experience of this e-scooter. I will be updating this post as time progresses]

Co-incidentally, I am writing this post while a nationwide strike is going on about petrol and diesel price hikes (1 lit petrol = Rs. 85 at the time of this writing) while I am happily riding my e-scooter which is completely free of the word "oil". As I had a requirement to buy a new 2 wheeler, I was searching for options in the market. I had a strong preference to buy an e-scooter due to various reasons that are obvious and planned to buy a petrol based scooter only if I cannot find a viable option in e-scooter ranges. So I started a research, found 3 promising options available in the market - Okinawa, Hero Electric and 22Motors. Hero Electric were initially successful in creating a poor impression 2 years ago on e-scooters, they are coping up with it. However, I liked the Indian startups Okinawa and 22Motors for their varieties. I chose Okinawa and after little more than 1 month of usage with 1st service complete, I am quite happy with it.

What did I buy?

I bought Okinawa Praise for close to Rs 74000 in total in July 2018. I did not attempt to try 22Motors Flow as I personally liked the look and feel of Praise and having a dealership in my city. I am not going to do a price comparison or feature comparison.

Why did I buy? What features does it have? What is so good about it?

These stats are from whatever I gathered and observed with real time driving experience for little over 1 month. I travel about 35 KM every day for office commute and other reasons in the city of Hyderabad and the terrain contains ups, downs, bridges, high traffic, good-bad roads etc.

  • Its giving me a mileage of close to 100-120 KM on road per full charge in the city. Each full charge takes 7-8 hours.
  • Its friendly and safety features are a great deal. For example, the wheel lock alarm system, no start on side stand, auto low speed reverse movement while backing up, USB charging outlet, normal plug socket for charging etc are great to have features.
  • No Engine means No Sound, No Combustion, No Pollution, Lesser Maintenance etc. It works simply on a battery set and a motor. I started getting an extra monthly electricity bill of close to Rs 400 for my usage described above against a petrol bill of close to Rs 1600.
  • It has a great leg room and regenerative power mechanism during drive.
  •  No worries about driving it in the rain as I rode it about a week in rain just to test.
  • It can hit 65 KMPH on road in Sport mode and can additionally get to 75 KMPH in turbo mode if needed in those "over taking" scenarios.
  • Packaged with regular modern features like Tubeless tyres, disc brakes, day lights etc.

What is not so great about it?

  • Okinawa Praise has a higher ground clearance which is good in a way as per its design but people who are bit short (< 5'4") will have a problem reaching their legs to ground.
  • Additionally, people accustomed to driving scooters like Activa and Jupiter will have to ergonomically adjust their sitting.
  • Another thing is the turn indicators arrows in the dashboard are not so clearly visible in the Sun light although the actual indicators are clearly blinking.
  • The handle controls are a bit to far to reach from the grip. I felt the fingers needed to be long to reach the controls for horn, head light switch etc.
  • No complaints on pick up in general but at times in the traffic when the brake is released, it takes an extra second to accelerate. Its not a negative point but not sure if it can be improved.
  • Additionally, the battery indicator does not necessarily show the exact battery levels when you power the bike on. This is explained by the Showroom during the sales as well. You will get to know the accurate battery levels only during the load like, while you are actually driving or when you are driving up the terrain. This will confuse the riders and until you get real experience, you will not get the real idea about how much actual battery you are running with. Adding to this confusion, the battery recharges automatically whenever a break is applied and the level increases indicating the same.

What not to expect?

  • Do not expect the same speed and pick up when you are riding with another person on the scooter. It will be a bit less just like a petrol bike.
  • Do not expect the same speed while riding up a slope and lesser speeds while riding down.
  • Do not expect immediate pick ups after or during a brake.
  • Do not expect to be a race winner, while riding it with petrol bikes, but you will almost reach there.
  • Do not expect that it will always be a major catastrophic problem if the e-scooter does not charge. Most of the times, it ends being a minor one that can even be fixed over phone.

Is this e-scooter for me?

Re-consider purchasing e-scooter if any of the answers for the following is an yes for you. Some of the questions might not be suitable in future when Lithium battery is used or when charging stations come up on roads and highways.

  • Do I ride my normal petrol bike crazily on the road and traffic as if I am hero performing stunt?
  • Do I ride more than 100 KM per day and cannot charge after that?
  • Do I ride in hilly areas where the road inclination angle is more than 22 deg ?
  • Do I need more than 65 KMPH speed?
  • Can I manage to get a charging point in the parking lot where I park my e-scooter?
  • Do you frequently travel with a partner with whom the combined passenger weight crosses 150 KG?

What if the battery dies while I am riding?

To be honest, at the moment you cannot do anything but to charge it by plugging it in to a near by socket or carry the vehicle in a truck to home and charge it there. Yes, that is the answer a normal commuter expects too. Imagine you are on road with very less petrol in your bike, you still started to office thinking you will be able to manage. But the bike ran out of petrol and stopped in a no petrol bunk for 10 KM area. What do you do? Its the same thing. You take care of your battery charge in advance. You plan your commutes based on the battery levels shown in the indicator. The problem might be less painful with more EV charging stations coming up soon but yes, for now, plan your commutes properly. The simplest way is to charge it daily after your commute is done for the day. It charges whatever it needs and cuts off automatically. It is the recommended procedure for long life of the batteries too. By the way, the batteries are to be replaced after 36000 KMs. A Li ion battery variant is expected to be released by Dec 2018 and the charging time of the battery is expected to be decreased by 50%.

Finally, Why did I take risk of buying an e-scooter when there are no solid reviews about it and which is recently launched in the market?

I believed that Petrol/Diesel is not the future. We need cleaner energy production and consumption. I was surprised by the features during the research as the initial electric scooters were not so great. I believed that I got what I wanted after walking and talking to the dealership. I might have written this review too early, just after 45 days of buying it. Well, that's the first impression. Things like overall performance might change later on aging but till now its running as promised by the dealer. So I trust them and at the moment, I am proud of buying it too.

My Current Rating - 4.5/5 - Excellent

Review after 2.5 years

So I had to change the battery pack from Lead Acid to Lithium Ion. This is a great upgrade. Disappointing fact is that the lead acid battery pack did not reach the mileage as promised initially by Okinawa. So that was a double investment for me and it almost costed same as the original Okinawa praise pro with Li battery thats in market right now. So its not a disaster in terms of total investment that I made on my vehicle but its a disappointment it didnt reach the expectation. Do you need to worry about it if you are going to buy this? NO. Because there are no lead acid battery vehicles in the market now.

Updated rating - 4/5 - mainly because I had to change the battery sooner than expected

Solution Deployer for Sharepoint 2010

DOWNLOAD HERE

How it works

·         After you install, Solution Deployer for SharePoint 2010 provides a config.xml file in which there are various values to be populated as per your environment. This is a onetime task and you can populate multiple environments too. More details about this xml and how to fill it following sections.
·         Copy the WSP files to a location on any of the servers or all the servers along with the required text files.
·         Run the tool by selecting the required options in the GUI. Check the status of the deployment in the status update pane.
That’s it!!

Prerequisites

SharePoint farm should be reachable from the computer the tool is running.
PowerShell Remoting should be enabled on both the SharePoint servers and the computer on which the tool is running.
The tool is supported to run on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. (CredSSP authentication support)
Make sure the text files for each set of WSPs/change is available as described in user guide section.

Installation (One Time)

Installation is pretty much easy. Download the zip file to any server or computer from which you can reach the farm by executing the tool. Here is the step by step process in detail.
Extract the contents of the zip file and leave the directory structure intact.
Open PowerShell console with administrative privileges and execute the script ‘SPDeployerPreRequisiteSetupClient-OneTimeRun.ps1’ under “FirstTimeSetup-OneTimeExecution” folder. Remember that this should be run on the computers on which this tool is running.
Type Yes or Run Once where ever the script prompts you to do so.
Copy the file “SPDeployer-PreRequisiteSetupServer-OneTimeRun.ps1” to all the application and web front end servers of the farm to a directory.
Log on to all the application and web front end servers of the SharePoint farm and open
PowerShell console with administrative privileges. Change the directory to the place where
you copied the script to “SPDeployer-PreRequisiteSetupServer-OneTimeRun.ps1” and execute the same. Type Yes or Run Once where ever the script prompts you to do so.
That’s it. The environment is ready to run the tool.

Configuration Modifying Config.xml (One Time, and later, Need based)

This section basically describes about setting up config.xml. This xml contains all the SP2010 farm related information required for successful functioning of the tool. This is an Easy to fill xml. Caution should be taken not to change any tags. Only the values should be changed according to your needs. The points below explain about various tags. The tags missing in these point are obvious and need not be explained.
The XML is structured this way.
Parent Node (SHAREPOINT_CONFIGURATION) -> Environment Classification ->Application
Classification in each environment
1)       Fill the “EnvName” value as your environment name. For example, Development, Disaster Recovery etc.
2)       Fill the value between tags as the enterprise domain where the sharepoint farm resides and does user authentication.
3)       Fill the value between tags as the username with farm admin privileges or privilege to deploy WSPs and manage features. Do not mention
‘domain\username’ format but just ‘username’
4)       Fill the value between tags as the encrypted password of the farm admin user mentioned above. The password can be encrypted using
“encryptString.ps1” PowerShell script present in “EncryptionTool” directory of the extracted and installed folder. Right click on encryptString.ps1 and select “Run with PowerShell”. Provide the plain text password at the prompt and hit Enter. You will get the encrypted string. Copy and paste the encrypted string in between these tags in the xml.
5)       Fill the value between tags with all the application and web front end server names in comma separated format. The first server mentioned in the csv server list is the server used by the tool to do all the deployment work.
6)       Fill the value between tags with UNC or absolute path where you want to store all the logs of this tool. This logs who is working on the deployment and all the text shown in the status update pane.
7)       Fill the value between tags with the central administration solution management page URL.
8)       Fill the value of “AppName” in tags with the web application name.
9)       Fill the value of tags with the absolute path on the server where you store all the WSPs and the related text files. More details about the text files in the User guide.
10)   Fill the value of with the URL of the web application as you see in central administration.
11)   Fill the value of tags with the relative path of the IIS virtual directory of the web application.
The tags can be of any number based on your setup and so the applications under tags.

Quick User Guide

The following are the quick steps to jump start using the tool.
1)      Maintain a common folder (deployment scripts base path) on any server of sharepoint farm and copy the WSPs deployed to that folder
2)      Create and copy 2 text files into the same directory whose names are of format “ChangeNumber_WSPList.txt” and “ChangeNumber_Features.txt” where change number is the actual change number for this release.
3)      List the wsps to be deployed in ChangeNumber_WSPList.txt comma separated with URL to which the WSP should be scoped. If it is global do not mention anything.
4)      List the feature IDs associated with the WSPs to be activated and deactivated in the ChangeNumber_Features.txt file.
5)      Run the SharepointDeployerV3.1.exe and fill in the required details. Click Apply Config button.
6)      This populates the WSP text files to be used for the deployment and features for activation and deactivation. Select the right options for the deployment and click Deploy.
7)      Check the status pane for updates.

User Guide

In order to maintain consistency, especially when deploying same set of WSPs across various environments, the following process works well but you can modify it as you need. The following steps are explained considering a general scenario of every enterprise into consideration. It might differ a little from what you do but it can always be customised.
Consider there is a requirement from business to sharepoint developers and the developers have written code in the form of 3 WSPs which creates 2 features to a sitecollection of web application webapp1. However all the WSPs are existing WSPs in production and they have to be replaced with these new ones. They want to deploy these 3 WSPs in Dev environment first. The enterprise is using Solution Deployer for Sharepoint to do the WSP deployments. Considering the enterprise practises ITIL Change and Release management, this is what the developer does.
1)       The developer creates a Change record and the change number is RFC12345. This is used to track the deployment till it reaches production from development.
2)       While building WSPs, the developer also creates two text files with following name format. This is a must.
a.        RFC12345_WSPList.txt
b.       RFC12345_Features.txt
The WSPList text file is used while retraction and deployment and Features.txt file is used during feature activation and deactivation. You can skip creating any of these files if you are not doing retraction/deploying or activation/deactivation.
3)       The content of RFC12345_WSPList.txt is as follows.

Basically it will contain the list of WSPs along with any specific URL to which the WSP need to be deployed to. The URL and the WSP are separated by a comma. Also if the WSP has to be deployed globally, there is no need to place a comma.

4)       The content of RFC12345_Features.txt is as follows.

Basically, this will contain the Feature IDs or Feature Names of the features that are going to deactivated and activated in this particular deployment and the scope of the feature. All the features listed will be deactivated and activated if the option is selected in the tool. If no scope is mentioned, it gets deactivated the default scope.

5)       Now, the directory in which you copied the WSPs and the above text files is the deployment scripts base path and the absolute path of this directory should be placed in the tags in config.xml file.
6)       Launch the tool by double clicking on SharepointSolutionDeployerV3.2.exe file.

7)       Provide the RFC Number in the first field. For example RFC12345
8)       Select the environment
9)       Select the application of the environment to which deployment is happening
10)   Click on Apply Config to populate all the fields in section below. The fields will be auto populated based on the process that we have followed earlier. In cast the file names or paths are different, you have an option to change them.

11)   Check the boxes for the actions that you want to carry out and click on Deploy button.
12)   The tool will complete all the required validations during execution and complete the required actions that are selected. The status is shown in the status field.
Points to Note:
a)       The tool is basically a powershell script wrapped up in an exe. So there will be a console window that opens along with the tool. The console window displays any errors during execution and also displays overall status messages as well.
If you do not want the console to open and you want just the GUI, execute the exe with – noconsole option.
b)       Make sure you populate the encrypted password and other values in config file properly. Any mistakes in config file will lead to mistakes and errors. The encrypted password feature is to enhance the security.
c)       If you do not want to follow the process mentioned above, you could still use the tool by modifying the text file paths on the server during execution.
d)       In case you want to use different text files for retraction and deployment, you have an option in the tool to retract using a different file. By selecting the option, the tool will consider the file that you mention here for retraction and the actual WSPList file for deploying WSP files.
e)       There is an option for config file changes which halts the execution of the tool in case you want to make any other changes after deactivation/retraction/deployment/activation steps. This might include changing any web.config entries or owstimer.exe.config entries etc. You can select the options on prompt to continue further with IIS reset and timer restart.
f)        The sequence of actions carried out by the tool is
a.        Deactivate features
b.       Retract Solutions
c.        Deploy solutions
d.       Activate features
e.       Config File Changes
f.         IIS reset
g.        Timer restart
If you do not select any option in the above list, the tool will skip that action but the sequence is maintained.

A Word to My Fellow Indians…

As I want to write ‘disclaimers’ for my posts all the time, here are few disclaimers for this post too. The important one being, “I am not trying to say that all other countries, other religions and other cultures are useless. I am just saying about and quoting things that I know & see. I agree to the fact that I don’t know lot of things.” Moreover, I might have included ‘everyone’ in the entire text below. Every line that I am going to say below is known to everyone who is capable to read this blog/post. Its just that I am reiterating the facts. Its just that I am reminding things. Its just about you, me and people around us in India.

At this moment, I am in a confusion about where to start this post as the title contains the WORD, India. May be the  word WORD is very lightly weighed when followed by a great country’s name. Yes, definitely, I am proud of my country. I never heard anyone saying they hate their own country. There might be people under such category. I am writing this post after seeing the various articles in new papers daily and couldn’t understand what is happening to our people. Just to remind the history and what we are, here are few points.

  • We are the descendants of one of the oldest living civilizations in the world.
  • We are among the firsts to have a script for a language, firsts to build cities and firsts to have one of the finest drainage systems.
  • We are the ones who invented the digit ‘zero (0)’ with out which we cannot live now. Imagine how the world would have run on the most complex Roman numerals.
  • The religions that were born here never differentiated human beings with other life and even, the environment. In fact, apart from bringing the most decent and scientifically advanced practices, our religions wanted to pray the omnipresent in each and every thing that you see. The most important of all the practices is monogamy and we understood how important it is.
  • We have given the world, our own natural medical system i.e, Ayurveda which not only includes various points about general medicine but also details about surgeries.
  • Yoga and meditation are the gifts to the world from India. Do you know how much response you get if you start yoga training abroad?
  • It is a fact many non-Indian writers/researchers did research about our culture, civilization, religions and gods. They have published articles describing how crucial in making one’s life happy and peaceful. Stories, especially about Hindu gods, are told popularly to children and adults to develop their personality and positive attitude.
  • We have developed our own ways of life without depending on any other foreign country. Luckily, we provided with the abundant resources as well.

The above points are just few feathers in the cap. There are many to add these. What do they all say? Ancestral Indians included very intelligent, research oriented scholars, writers, scientists, priests, labor, technicians, artists and the most (of the) common people who practiced the best ‘VALUES’ of life and who were good at heart. Consequently, they prospered with material luxuries, money and happiness. I saw a post in Facebook which contained an original picture of a British high commissioner writing about the togetherness among the people and how healthier and wealthier they were here before they actually occupied the entire Indian territory.

But, what is happening to us? From an individual who wants to occupy personal space of others in any way to a person who is sitting at one of highest positions in terms of power or governing bodies trying to bluff people and take no care about the people he is ruling, why is everyone thinking in the wrong ways? Why is an individual’s attitude getting close to what is called as bad?Why someone wants to go to higher positions at the cost of others? Don’t you have any idea about morals and values or Do you think that being bad is being great? This is how people you interact daily with are.

When you travel in a packed train, and someone standing beside you requests you to adjust a little so that he can sit beside you. With a good heart you give him/her a seat. But they start taking advantage of it. After sometime when you go out to buy a water bottle and come back, that person would have occupied 90% of the seat and shows you some other seat to sit. People like this sit in reservation compartments and demand that its their seat. TC of the train never bother about these as they get money too.

A person brutally kills his girl friend because she broke the relationship with him understanding that he is the wrong guy.

A public servant needs additional money from the public apart from his salary in order to accomplish his responsibility.

An IAS officer amasses money to favor someone or get involved in a fraud.

A CEO of a group of companies illegally manages the company’s money and cheats his shareholders.

A common auto driver molesting foreign tourist. (Where is Athidhi devo bhava?)

Some people use phrases like “No matter who ever come and tell me, I do not change my decision”. Some people doesn’t give respect to their parents, at any cost. Most of the students never respects their teacher/lecturer. Some people do not show respect towards the old and elders. Some people show arrogance and head strength in their words. Some people never care to listen to his well wishers. Some can never identify and differentiate a good and a bad friend. To be true, these are not part of our Indian culture and in Hindu mythology, these were proven to be symptoms of evil (Rakshasa or Asura).

A group of ministers watching porn in a place where they are expected to discuss about people’s problems. We have so many ‘Sabha’s like Loksabha, Rajyasabha, vidhanasabha more generally called as Parliament and Assembly. What is happening in assemblies, parliament these days? Is there a single proper useful discussion happening? Every party/member wants to walk out, start abusing each other. It has reached to a peak level that people started throwing their footwear at speakers and among themselves. They all knew that people’s money is behind successfully organizing an assembly and they are wasting it. Its our misfortune that we are living in such times. How should one organize a ‘Sabha’ and how should one behave in such Sabha? We do not need lectures from foreign universities to answer that question. Our own ‘Ramayana’ has a clear answer. Just before onset of war with Raavana, Maharshi Valmiki compares two ‘Sabha’s in Yuddhakanda. One by Raavana and the other by Rama. You can refer to those verses and you can exactly identify which type of Sabha is currently running in our Parliament and state assemblies. You can also identify how a ‘Sabha’ should run.

A change in the mindset of every Indian at the root is what we need now.  The way in which people greet each other, the way in which people talk to each other, the topics about which a group of people or friends or families discuss etc, everything should change. That is what will happen when your mindset inclines towards positive attitude. That is when your personality develops. The first step towards a high valued life is the way in which you talk. If you lose some’thing’ important in your life, you might get it back but if you lose your word, you would never recover the damage caused by it. For example, again from the same Ramayana, Hanuma has wiped out the thought of committing a suicide from the mind of Sita, only with his words. Another example from the same epic, Lord Rama says to Sugreeva like this “Sugreeva, there is no brother like Bharatha, no wife like Sita and no friend like you”. This is in a situation when he wanted to contradict a statement made by Sugreeva. Understand the depth and sweetness in the words and the way in which he contradicted his friend’s statement.

In spite of these many mentalities around us, we are still respected only because of our own traditions and culture which is also our heritage; only because there are at least few people who are good at heart; only because of epics like Ramayana are still being preached everywhere to develop the personality.  But I got a fear that this might get worsened and hence I wanted to give a precaution to everyone.  I would really love to see if many stories of Ramayana are included as a part of curriculum to school students to develop their personality. I want to add few points about Ramayana as well in this post as I coined it above. Although people might think that this post is something that promotes a religion, I want to say its not a promotion but a precaution. Someone might say “Ramayana is story of Lord Rama who is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, a God. But I am not a God and I can not follow all those principles”. For those who say this, please understand that the incarnation is a human being. No where in his life, he showed himself as God. He proved everyone that a human being can live with values. If you read Ramayana as story of God, you do not get any thing to change in your life but if you read it as a story of a human, you have got something to change in your life. Also I agree that there are many changes that our culture underwent because of various invasions, scientific improvements etc. But there is no one who said to leave the good in you.

All in all, I just want to say “Be good to yourself and be good to others”.

“There can be a time when there is no person to listen to a good word told by someone but there should not be a time when there is no person to tell a good word.”

Tit - Bits

I’d like to start a new post with the some knowledge bits that I come across in my life. These might be useful sometimes in your life as well. I will update this post regularly whenever I find such information.

Let me know in case if you find any discrepancy in the content that I post below. Leave your comments and suggestions.

An Extract from 'My Experiments with Truth'

“I saw that writers on vegetarianism had examined the question very minutely, attacking it in its religious, scientific, practical and medical aspects.

Ethically they had arrived at a conclusion that man's supremacy over the lower animals meant not that the former should prey upon the latter but that the higher should protect the lower and that there should be mutual aid between the two as between man and man

Scientifically some had concluded that man's physical structure showed that he was not meant to be a cooking but a frugivorous animal, that he could take only his mother's milk and as soon as he had teeth, should begin to take solid foods. Medically they rejected all the spices and condiments.

Practically and economically, they had demonstrated that a vegetarian diet was the least expensive.”

Health tip - For Gents

If you find severe pain (and swelling most of the times) in your lower abdomen/testicular/pubic region, you are even not able to stand properly (& can have back pain), be warned seriously as you have 6 hrs to avoid the worst to happen. It might not be the case every time but six hours from start of pain and if you neglect, you have great chances to lose your genital system. Medical Consultation immediately required. This condition would even happen because of a mosquito bite.

Health tip – For Everyone

If you find severe. There is a principle in Naturopathy and I guess that will hold true for every other medical system. The more number of times you breath per minute, the less number of years that you live. For example, take the example of a dog. It inhales around 50 times per minute and its life time is around 10 years. A tortoise takes breath hardly coupe of times a minute, and its life time ranges > 500 years. As humans, we breath normally around 17 times per minute and our life time is 100 years (theoretically). In Indian mythology, they say saints and sadhus have live for hundreds of years. This was only possible by controlling the amount and the number of times they used to breathe. This is a concept behind pranayama. So Pranayama heals and do practice it regularly.

Health tip – For Everyone

Here is some information about a general problem that bothers most of the people. – Gastric trouble. Complete details about this problem is explained with great narration below. Unfortunately I found this article in Telugu but let me know if you finds it difficult to understand. I will try to translate the same. Thanks to EENADU Telugu news daily.

My Ideas for good GOVERNANCE

No one currently dares to think about entering into current days politics. Although some people have good aspirations to develop the country with the help of politics, the other politicians are making them corrupt and almost everything is now polluted and corrupted in the country. This comment does not require any proof as everyone is watching news and are reading daily news papers. If the discussion goes on like this, it would become a very good topic to discuss without yielding any useful conclusion.
But as a citizen of India, I would always love to see some development going on somewhere. The success is without corruption, without any black money circulation, without wrong bill and wrong proof submission. But it has become very rare for a common man to see these things and if something happens like that it is really a magic, surprise and wonder to the people of India. It is like as if someone saw flying plates and UFOs in the sky. I feel it is the responsibility of the people while utilizing their right to vote. They should vote to the people whom they believe that the candidate would do some development to the constituency. But this won't happen as corruption starts here at election campaigns where the leaders start distributing money and liquor etc to the illiterates and low class people. This is the starting point of corruption and it continues until the next election. Again after 5 yrs, this cycle continues. So the starting point of corruption is in the hands of people and I would say that the common man is responsible for country to be like this currently.
My ideas for very good governance that leads to very fast development assume the following points
  • The government strictly implements the below ideas and no one should change the rules and the CM is basically very educated, disciplined, strict and legal.
  • I assume that the government starts at least one or 2 services below legally with full intention of doing good to the public. The others would automatically start to inculcate. The 'bad' tree grew till now because of a bad seed. These ideas are good seeds and I believe they would surely grow in to a 'good' tree.
  • People would actively participate in the idea and implementation
  • It is always impossible to implement good without discipline and strictness
  • All the strictness and discipline is because it is assumed that people lost confidence and belief on the government, politicians etc and no one is perfect these days.
  • I am also assuming that the ACB (Anti Corruption Bureau) is basically not corrupted and the ACB officials do work without corruption and with full enthusiasm. If not under job pressures, they would have brought so many 'black' politicians into light.
  • I know if the ideas are started to get implemented, it is difficult as we would be facing many political, geographical, religion related problems but I strongly believe they are not completely irresolvable when your aim is development. They can be managed and resolved at each stage.
  • Most of my ideas given below are meant to be implemented and explained keeping in mind that the geographical granule considered is a State but not a mandal or a district or country.
  • After reading this entire document, someone can ask me "You explained these many methods and are criticizing the government. Why can't you take the problem on to your shoulders and fight against this?" My answer to this is "Yes, it is exactly what I did. I understood the problem and that's why I proposed the concept. And it should be collective effort of every one to fight against this."
The following are some ideas which would surely lead to development and develop a corruption less and black money less society.
Ideas
The basic idea is to make all the government processes centrally computerized and no pen or paper is to be used. I have this idea when I started my career as a software engineer but some time later I came to know this point has already been quoted by Nandan Nilekani.
Implementing strict attendance rules to the government employees and taking necessary action for any rule breaks.
The most important action that needs to be taken immediately is to remove the human intervention between the common man (we can say Government's customers) and the government employees. This would surely at least remove 95% of corruption all over. Some points on 'How' to do this are explained later on.
Whatever the major project/program/scheme/developments to the public introduced by the government that has more than Rs 1 crore budget allotted to them, should be publicized and all the transactions should be made transparent. That is all the money related transactions should be made available to the public and should be made transparent. Suppose a project takes 2 crore rupees of money, open a bank account for that and provide the account credentials open to the public (only read permissions) so that public can check every transaction. Whatever be the transaction that is made from that particular account, it should be remarked with the reason behind the transaction. All the bills and required proofs should be made open to the public and press as open proofs. This always builds the confidentiality on the government. I bet government would never take this initiative and it will surely surprise me if any of the governments till now took such initiative. If there are any concerns in implementing this initiative they should find other steps of resolution rather than not implementing this step. This would surely stop the black money circulation as well. I am really surprised to come to know that the current Indian black money levels at Swiss bank only are about Rs. 74 Lakh Crores.
As mentioned above all the direct interaction between the government officials whether it is RTO or registrars or police or whoever it may be, should be minimized. Take either the help of computers or take the help of anti corruption bureau by giving them more powers to act as third parties to act between the people who want to take the government service and the government employees. This action of putting some third parties between government officials and the people can also be outsourced to some external bodies established especially for this work. This creates employment as well. But this would not decrease the relation between the government and the people; in fact, increases the belief on the government as they are trying to prevent corruption.
Let me think in the bad politician's way and selfish manner. If I am running the government (take the present scenario) I would think like this (considering I am the current CM). "My opposition ate lot of people's money and land. And tomorrow after 5 years, I may not again become the CM or our party might not rule the state again. So let me make money as much as I can. Let me collect lands as much as I can. Let me make corruption as much as I can and let me cross my opposition's level of corruption during their tenure". Now, after the election the opposition rules the state and think in the same lines again. So finally the politicians and their families are becoming richer and richer and the common man is staying at his own economic level all through his life and continues paying taxes (feeding the bad politicians). Now my question is why can't they make win-win situation? I mean, Ok let them swallow some people's money and satisfy their thirst and do some good work like this of providing basic commodities and services to people. So automatically people start believing you and next time they will make you stand and again do some corruption & do development as well. You will be the permanent ruling party and you would be keeping on getting the black money. We as people will excuse the government if they do corruption but will always blame you(government) if you do corruption at the cost of development. This way of doing some good in bad is still very much better than that of all bad, at least now as after 61 years of the development that in terms of providing basic amenities like housing, clothing, healthy food, education, health, water, power etc being this much rich in natural resources and talent, is an offence that is worth punishable if there exists any punishment greater than death sentence. We are seeing a 10 year development in 61 years of independence. Sometimes I feel if British had ruled this country another 20 years, we would have become a well developed country by now. I don't know why the competition in earning black money is not shown in providing real development. They would introduce welfare schemes and very less amount of people would get benefited. Schemes should be something which solves the problems that are there in every class of people. Specialized schemes for specialized problems/classes of people is not shown anywhere.
There is also one important point that people should remember. It is not possible for the government, always, to approach you to solve your needs. We would always here some welfare schemes like "The Government approaching the people to serve them" which would never give a success always. The people should also go to the government and demand whatever they want. It is their right and responsibility. But most of the people might ask where to go and whom to ask for small problems. So we would adjust our selves. Why should we adjust? 'Adjusting' is one of the historical mistakes that we people are committing; other important historical mistakes being most populous, being illiterates etc.
Thus to implement such a good, disciplined & developed society I have an idea, as a software engineer, which integrates most of above ideas and implements in a single run. This would however require some time to materialize and would surely be a big success if given enough publicity. The government which implements this would surely, I believe is going to rule the state/country for long time unless they make a mistake.
Implementing ITIL standards and processes, treating Society and people as infrastructure – Utilizing E-governance and E-government to the fullest
For most of the people reading this article ITIL might be a new term. You can get complete information on ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) standards and processes over the Internet. The main concept behind these standards is to provide set of service support processes by managing and maintaining IT infrastructure of a company/corporation. The library is a collection of best standards for providing such services. Several management processes like Service desk, incident management, change management, problem management, configuration management, release management etc are part of these standards which I would not like to explain and go away into the technical details as if this is an ITIL article. The only reason I wanted to coin the term ITIL here is because I have got the below explained idea as I have worked on ITIL based support processes. As government is the biggest support provider to the people, I thought why the government can't implement these ideas with respect to people. Why can't the people be treated as infrastructure of the society (similar to IT infrastructure in ITIL) and follow the similar support processes in order to solve all the problems we have? The question made me think of the following idea. I am sure this is going to help but I am not sure about
  1. How many of these are implemented?
  2. Is this already implemented? (I bet not)
  3. How many people have already suggested the similar idea or individual parts of the concept? (I came to know about some)
  4. Why is this not implemented if someone proposed it?
I don't want to answer all the above questions but I would like to tell something about a beautiful concept which is well framed and implemented but not being used to its full extent i.e., E-governance.
As per one definition, E-Governance is a process of reform in the way Governments work, share information, engage citizens and deliver services to external and internal clients for the benefit of both government and the clients that they serve. The use of information and communication technologies in public administrations combined with organizational change and new skills in order to improve public services and democratic processes and strengthen support to public policies. There are some other terms like Right to Information act 2005, PPP, delivery models like GTC, GTB etc related to this but I don't want to go in much detail about them.
My concept of providing public services like the following provided by the government are all should be brought under one roof.
  • Land Revenue
  • Transport Related (license, permits and registrations)
  • Public distribution services
  • Utility bill payments
  • Information about all government welfare schemes to different classes of people categorically
  • Municipal services
  • All common public requests
  • Comments
  • Feedbacks
  • Suggestions
  • Housing services
  • Agriculture related services
  • Youth services
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Excise and Taxation
  • Education and Training related
  • Labor and employment related
  • Small savings related
  • Others
Existing e-Governance portals
If you have seen websites like http://suwidha.nic.in/ and http://esevaonline.com/, they are providing good services to the people. But what is the index that these are maximum utilized by the people? The rating 'utilization targets' is very low, I believe, when compared to traditional and conventional methods of utilization of government's services by the people. People are more inclined towards doing things manually rather than believing IT and websites. Why?
'Suwidha'is an online portal by Government of Punjab for providing e-services to the citizens and 'e-Seva' is another similar portal that provides services by the government of Andhra Pradesh for providing services to citizens. But these portals mostly provide information on 'How' to utilize government's services but not provide services directly online. There are many processes that can be made online/computerized/self-serviced and several others which need direct interaction between citizens utilizing services and government officials, can be modified so that the interaction is avoided or monitored. But this is not happening. Also there is no belief and confidence in people that if you utilize any existing services in these portals today, tomorrow they will again say that is not valid and you should not do like this.
Also for your information there is one good website which provides ONLY information http://www.india.gov.in/ .
Thus these "information providing" portals are very less utilized and many people does not require all this information except for exam writing purposes and for general knowledge.
Necessity and Design of a new portal – that can provide a change

Thus I feel there is a requirement for an integrated portal that provides all the services, information and take suggestions & feedbacks from, the citizens. I am listing down all the points related to such a portal that provides services.
  • The government forms a special body for maintenance of the portal under the IT department of the government. This team is structurally big as it deals with the portal that is being accessed by the complete state.
  • The development of the portal should be given to a well qualified software developing company in order to have quality. The contract should be made in such a way that the company provides and acts a third level support when the government's portal team fails in resolving an issue.
  • The government should also form a call center namely "Government's Service Desk (GSD)" and the team selected for this service desk should have all the knowledge about government's services and can give information about every action/utility in the portal.
  • All the service processes of each department should be computerized and very well organized as per process internally and should be transparent or linked to any other department unless it is there in the process.
  • The access to this portal is provided to each and every citizen of the state or can be provided in groups as in the cases of families or charities or old age homes etc. Each and every citizen irrespective of any criteria should be given a unique identity number. This is called National Personal Identity Number (NPIN). This concept is not new and is already being followed in many other countries. This can also be termed as "Social Security Number" or "National Citizen ID". This concept is also being supported and addressed by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in one of his speeches and in National Campaign for Eradication of Terrorism (NCET). In his words "Implement National Citizen ID card for all the transactions with the Government services, Business services and private services at the earliest". The ID should be given personally based on several factors and all the details with respect to each ID should be stored in a database. To be clearer, at the end of this task, you will have a database that contains as many ids as the population of a state. You will also have all the information like who is the son of whom and the current address along with permanent address etc. So if you know any NPIN, then it is possible for the portal admins and government to track out complete history of the individual. Based on the NPINs each citizen is provided with a password and the user should use these credentials to logon to the portal for getting serviced by the government. I know it is a very difficult task but to remove this "bad" tree which has its roots many hundreds of feet down into the society, we have to take up this difficult step. After all, population explosion is the parent of all the problems in the country and we have to bear with it.
  • All the above information can be well utilized by literates who can access the portals on their own through different ways but illiterates will have a problem of how to use the portal and how to access it. To solve this problem, there are a couple of methods. One is to use the GSD, by giving a call to them and provide their NPIN and can get the required service done. The other is to use the kiosk centers maintained by the portal team at different place mainly at places where illiteracy is more.
  • Issuing NPINs should start right away from cities and should expand to districts, towns and villages. As this process takes longer time to complete, it should be done with greater effort and force. Brainstorming by big heads in the government will result in deciding on the process of how to assign NPINs.
  • Publicity is an important criterion for the successful working of the portal. This should be publicized from the point of concept creation and start of implementation, in every nuke and corner of a state through every means describing the advantages.
  • The process of how this portal is the most important aspect. I will explain this taking an example. Consider license issuing mechanism in transport department. A person named X wants to have his car license issued. He has a NPIN/password issued to him. Normally the process is to take the LLR first and then after 1 month the original license by showing his driving skills in front of the break inspector. For this X logs on to the portal and selects the 'License Issue' under Services -> Transport Department hierarchy. He selects the option for booking slot for LLR exam on particular day and time. He will be acknowledged with a ticket reference number. In the background, a ticket will be created automatically with all the required information and will be dispatched to the appropriate RTA officer in the location. The RTA officer should acknowledge the ticket with the help of the ticketing tool. On the booked day, X approaches the portal kiosk and attends the exam. If he completes the exam, the ticket will be updated automatically with success or failure and the next course of action. From the user perspective, the ticket looks as if it's a service request and from the RTA officer's perspective it looks like a ticket on which he should respond within the agreed levels of SLAs (Service Level Agreements). If the RTA officer does not respond in time or does not acknowledge the ticket at each step, he is said to cross the SLA and action point is noted automatically against the RTA officer. After 1 month, X goes to the test ground by booking the slot and when he gets his turn, (system displays his name to start) he would start driving. The inspector on the other hand would always be standing in front of a camera and the camera should be placed so that the driving path should be covered in the video so that when X drives along the path, there is a proof that he drove the car and also there is no interaction or talks etc between X and the break inspector. The break inspector instantaneously updates the ticket and the ticket would be dispatched to the license generating queue from generation of license and posting it to the user's address. Consider a scenario where X drove the car well but he was rejected and asked to again perform later, he can update the ticket explaining his grievance and can escalate it to higher official with the help of GSD. On the whole, this particular ticket of issuing license to X is to resolve within agreed levels of times called SLAs and also there is an SLA for each queue or officer to respond. Any excessive deviations from SLAs would result in severe punishable actions against the government employees. Thus this would create a win-win situation.
  • Thus all the government service process which requires no direct intervention with the government officials can be designed to be made online. And all the service process that requires direct contact between government officials and public can be monitored using cameras etc so that the work gets done.
  • In most of the processes, the person X requires to submit certain proofs such as address proof, identity proof etc and these need not be handed over directly to the government officials. Drop boxes can be arranged in front of every government office so that the packet that contains all the required documents for the specified request can be dropped mentioning the ticket number. At the end of the day, a person collects all such received packets and correlates them to the corresponding ticket and finally acknowledges the ticket.
  • Also care should be taken that while assigning the NPINs to each individual. It should be seen that the details of particular individual are collected at very high granularity. What are the services that a particular individual has already been provided by the government, his/her photo, photo copies of educational qualifications, what welfare schemes can he be covered under etc should be collected at the time of assigning NPIN for future use.
  • Thus by this point of time, one should get an idea about the portal and should have understood that NPINs and ticket/service request numbers are important for the successful implementation of the idea.
  • Going further into details, consider another scenario. For example, a street light has aged out and should be replaced. The municipality people will normally come for round checks (assuming) for every 1 week and in the worst case, there is a probability that there is no street light for 1 week. If this is causing huge inconvenience to the public, who should hold the responsibility? Is it the government? Is it the municipality? Is it the public? This portal gives a solution for such scenarios. Using the complaint feature of the portal, a person X who is a resident of the street logs a complaint. This complaint is recorded as an incident (complaint) with a ticket number and is assigned to the respective department of the municipality. The concerned officer raises a change (Request for Change) based on the incident received to change the bulb. When the change is done, he closes the change and at each step an update is given in the incident. Once the change is complete, and if the service is satisfactory, the incident would also be closed by X. Else it can be escalated. As mentioned, each and every such request/complaint/feedback/suggestions/tickets are strictly monitored for satisfactory SLAs and if any SLA breaches happen, strict action should be taken against the concerned individual. After all, governments are for the people. Thus as mentioned above, this requires a separate wing in the IT department of the government. This portal team should know each and every point about the government, its contacts, its structure, and its procedures and should be having higher levels of control to take necessary actions against every misleading activity by any one or SLA breaching by an officer.
  • Feedbacks about the system should be taken with the help of surveys and probing questions etc regularly and necessary changes should be made to the processes and systems.
  • Integration of the service flow will always help us in getting analysis, reports in different views in a very fast manner. Every variable can be easily analyzed and necessary action can be taken.
  • Unlike the current grievance recording sections of various government websites where they are not at all cared to be taken into consideration, the grievance section of this portal is backed up by the concept of SLA and punishments. So everything is acknowledged and the response to the public will be good.
  • There will surely be protests from the government employees regarding several aspects because of the discipline and strictness in the implementation. It should be left to them to work in this environment and work with real motto of serving the public or just leave the job.
  • There will obviously be more and more service requests and complaints as time progresses when the portal gets fully publicized and popularized, which the current strength of the government employees cannot handle. So there is a need for new recruitments. Thus the employee levels in the government sector automatically increases.
BIG Doubt
I have explained lot of things and implementations in the post but now I am getting a doubt whether any government dares to implement this idea? I know there are lot other concerns that I left out in this article but sitting together with the learned and with days of brainstorming, all of them can be sorted out for sure. But I seriously bet if any government going to implement this. I don't know and I am not sure but I can say one thing. If any government starts implementing this, I am sure that they will rule the state for longer times, if properly implemented and utilized.
Properties & Advantages
  1. This is 24*7*365 portal along with the service desk. So public can login at any time and submit their request to the respective departments.
  2. Each request can be processed speedily when compared to conventional service provisions.
  3. This puts an end to the Corruption, bribery and black money.
  4. Improves security of the nation because of the NPIN
  5. Employment levels increase and attraction towards government jobs in the youth.
  6. The bad dies and the good cherish.
  7. Proper circulation of money and this improves economical aspects of the state. More people will be crossing the poverty line towards positive side.
  8. I agree it's a bit costly and more difficult to implement initially but once done, it has more and more long term benefits for the future citizens.
  9. Public issues and problems can be resolved efficiently
  10. Grievances to be handled efficiently
  11. Confidence towards government gets increased in the public along with a good opinion.
  12. All this is going to happen when there are more decent and educated in the people forming the government.
I don't want to conclude this document in any way. There is lot to be developed and lot to be done to the society by everyone. :-) By the way I would suggest the name of the portal as "SAMAJA SEVA"
